Germany become world champions with epic penalty shootout win over Belgium

Germany won the Hockey World Cup for the third time in their history as they defeated Belgium in the penalty shootout 5-4 on Sunday in Bhubaneshwar. The German team mounted another incredible comeback to come from 2-0 down.

Germany scripted an incredible penalty shootout win over Belgium on Sunday to be crowned as the Hockey World Cup champions for the third time in their history.

The German team became three-time champions as they secured a 5-4 win in the shootout after being two goals down earlier on in the match.

Niklas Wellen, Gonzalo Peillat and Mats Grambusch scored the goals for the Germans as they came back from a two-goal deficit to beat the defending champions at Bhubaneshwar in the summit clash.

Belgium got off to the best possible start as they raced into a 2-0 lead within the 10th minute. Florent van Aubel scored in the ninth minute to give the Belgian team the lead and then they doubled the lead through another field goal in the 10th minute.

Tanguy Cosyns put the ball into the net as Belgium seemed to be in cruise control. Germany would apply pressure in the second quarter. Despite missing a penalty stroke, Germany pulled one back through Niklas Wellen as he scored from a penalty corner.

Peillat then stepped up to the task in the 40th minute as he made it 2-2 through a penalty corner as the game was evenly poised at that moment.

Gramsbusch then gave the Germans the lead in the 48th minute to send the fans into raptures as they looked to seal another comeback win after beating Australia and England in similar fashion earlier on in the tournament.

Belgium were shaken up by the goal and started applying pressure into the German circle and their persistence paid off in the 58th minute as Tom Boon scored from a penalty corner to make it 3-3 and push the game into a shootout.

Germany and Belgium scored from their first attempts but Arthur de Sloover missed his chance to give Germany the advantage. Hannes Muller then scored and Victor Wegnez ended up missing his chance to make it 2-1 in the shootout.

Marco Miltkau missed his shot to add to the drama as Cosyns scored to make it 2-2. Thies Prinz then scored with his shot to make it 3-2 and Antoine Kina quickly equalized.

Grambusch then missed the important chance to win it as we entered sudden death with all to play for.

Wellen and Van Aubel made it 4-4 to heighten the tension around the game. Frinz then converted a spectacular effort to make it 5-4 and Belgium missed their final shot as Germany emerged as the winners.
